Could someone please remind me what 17 months olds like to play with? Think small, lightweight and preferably without batteries. Remember I only have 44 pounds. Oh...if you haven't made your music suggestions you have until tomorrow. I'll be loading the ipod then. Back to packing...

I am sure someone already said stacking cups. Most of the babies haven't seen many toys, so they tend to become over stimulated....I didn't take more than 5 toys....because our girl (1st adoption) liked our water bottles best. Remember you can buy what you need in China.
a small pack of crayons and a few of those really small packs of play-doh could keep my kids busy for a while! Since she's a girl I might pack a chapstick "lipstick" and some nail polish... you got to sit still and be calm to let your mani/pedi dry, right?! ;)
avoid stuffed animals and even dolls. yao yao was freaked with them and so were some other kiddos. actually she didn't mind the pink puppy but some other kids were terrified of them. she is still "weird" with stuffed toys sometimes.
don't plan on much...the kids are so out of it they don't play with much at first...you can always buy toys in guangzhou. they have lots of cheap junk.
yao yao was older but even a 17 month old would love those little cell phones they sell at walmart or target for like $3. hers is a flip princess phone. she still loves that phone.
Keep it simply; you don't want to over whelm (sp) her. I'm bringing a couple little rattles, a beach ball, some stacking cups (for the tub and outside of the tub) and maybe a few other small toys too.
I vote for stacking cups too!! Don't forget the Cheerios!
Stacking cups, a beach ball, and bubbles were were all my daughter was interested in at 18 months when we met her. Her truly favorite toys ended up being an empty St*rbucks cup with the lid and straw... it even worked its way into her visa picture. Best wishes!

Forget the crayons. Sorry but you don't need them. If she wants to color, you'll have an ink pen in the room. :)
Stacking cups, a mini-bottle of bubbles in a ziploc bag (that last step is IMPORTANT), maybe a blow-up beach ball (a mini one would be good since it would be smaller), those plastic baby car key things, bead necklaces.
I would not take anything else. Oh, a blanket or lovey. Forget dolls and all. You won't need them and it would waste precious space and weight. :))
Just my 2 cents.
LI said she was so glad she took the playdough. What about little photobooks of the kids with you all to help intro the kids for when you get home. A lovie? or a taggie? A soft 1st baby doll?
Stacking cups are good. Your best bet is to buy some toys there, as it will be something she gets to have from her province when she gets home, and they are very inexpensive. The little drums are cute and the kids love them. When you get to Guangzhou, some of the store owners will probably give her one if you shop in their store. I wouldn't bring a whole lot. I would save space for diapers instead. Chinese diapers are ok, but not as waterproof as american diapers, especially for the flight home!!!
Cannot wait to see your blog posts from China!!!!
Laura
what?? What am I thinking?? ha! Em loves purses and that tea set you gave her! It is her fav!!
one word...Pez...minus the candy.
Our girls were 18 months and loved stacking cups and I mean LOVED stacking cups. We also brought bubbles and these cool balls you can blow up but they're rubberized and textured so they're easy to catch. I also brought a few board books and the orphanage gave us back the photo book we'd sent to the girls.
Be careful about buying toys in China. They toy safety standards are different and lead paint is on lots of things.
