NOTE: the first longest Thursday in Womble history was September 24, 2009 (the Thursday Mei Mei came home from China) :)
We awoke to a cloudy overcast day outside our hotel but this day was pretty sunny within our four walls. We were OVERJOYED to finally be going HOME!!!!
We were up EARLY to catch the 7:20 am shuttle to the airport along with our friend Tammy and her new daughter A. The boys wore their aviation shirts to commemorate the day. Well, only two of my boys obliged my suggestion and one chose not to participate. I'll give you a hint. The one who didn't participate is manning the camera in the photo below. Oh, who am I kidding. The little people didn't even realize they were wearing aviation shirts but since I pick out their clothes...
We were severd by our friend Katherine C. No, that is not a misspelling. See below. She severd us as she checked us in to our seats in the cattle section (as the Chief lovingly refers)...
Then we began our lengthy adventure through the never ending series of lines to make it to our final gate. This is Little Buddy about half way there. Are we EVER going to get where we're going, Mom?
Standing in line for security, immigration, customs, elevators, escalators, a train and a few country mile walks with hundreds of your closest Asian
I plan to frame this photo for our Little Buddy. It speaks volumes to me in so many ways. I wonder what he was thinking. I know he can't grasp the significance of this moment in time but it seems so monumental to me...
Buckled in and ready for take off...
Good bye Hong Kong. Good bye China. We love you in a way others can not understand unless they have experienced you... Thank you for a lifetime of memories...
We survived the 15 hour and 15 minute flight the best way we knew how. One minute at a time. :) If you've ever flown on a plane that long you know what I mean. Of course WM wasn't leaving the ground without reading the safety manual cover to cover.
Shortly after his technical step by step memorization marathon he declared (to his aerophobic Mother), "Mom, I sure hope we make it home". Ummmmmm... yeah.... me too, son. Me too. ;)
We spent a lot of time watching the in flight screen and counting the miles to our destination.
We played a lot of peek-a-boo...
A little in seat entertainment... a little napping...
a little napping... a little snacking on hard rolls while trying not to hit the motion sick big brother in the head...
Overall Delta took excellent care of us. The flight had some major turbulence in the beginning but thankfully it settled out once we made it north of China. Wild Man had to use several of those little white bags in the front of his seat pocket along the way but overall everyone did well. Both boys slept about 4-5 hours total which helped pass the time for the big people (who did not sleep much at all). We landed in Detroit ON TIME and called the girls as soon as our wheels touched down. Hearing the excitement in their sweet voices was priceless. We were ALMOST HOME!!!
Little Buddy became a US citizen when his little feet hit the ground in Detroit. That moment happened while we waited in the immigration line. Someone decided to roll around on the floor and whine. We were so tired and I was unfortunately so nauseous I couldn't get to the camera.
It took us FOREVER to get through immigration. FOR.EV.ER! Over two hours for them to stamp our passports only to then be moved to a different line to process Little Buddy's immigration paperwork. We were exhausted (and slightly annoyed) but we were so thankful to be back on US soil. Note to other adoptive families: We were SO thankful we didn't schedule the flight home with the 2.5 hour layover. We were leaving the international terminal at the time the earlier flight was scheduled to depart. Thank you Lord!
We made it from the international terminal to our domestic terminal gate in time to grab a snack and change clothes. We were all thankful for clean clothes and our toothbrush!!
I think our newest American citizen was pretty thankful too...
Our flight home was on time so we were preparing to land before we knew it. I snapped this picture right after we touched down at our home airport. You can't see the Chief's face but you can see he is smiling from ear to ear and LB is waving his new flag. Words can not describe the feelings that overcome you when you know your family is about to be safely whole again.
next up...
Little Buddy's Homecoming...
